Fairyteller

Terms of use

What these terms cover

Fairyteller has a conversation with you about your child, then writes and reads them a new story most nights, in artificial intelligence's own voice and words, inside a world that continues from one night to the next. These terms are the agreement between you and us for using it. They are written for the adult who sets up the account — never for a child to read, and never something a child is asked to accept.

By creating an account, taking part in the conversation that gets your child's stories started, or using Fairyteller in any other way, you accept these terms for yourself and for every child you add. If you do not agree with them, please do not use Fairyteller.

Who can hold an account

You must be an adult with legal responsibility for the child or children you add — their parent, or another adult who cares for them day to day. You set the account up, you pay for it, and you manage it; your child never creates an account of their own, is never asked to accept these terms, and is never the one we deal with directly.

If you are unsure whether you are the right person to be doing this, please check with the child's parent or legal guardian before you go further.

What Fairyteller is, and what it is not

Fairyteller is entertainment for bedtime: a new story most nights, written for your child from what you have told us about them, and read aloud in a voice you choose.

It is not a medical device, a therapy, an educational programme, or a substitute for professional advice of any kind. We do not promise that using it will change how a child sleeps, learns, speaks, or feels, and nothing in the app, on our website, or in these terms should be read as that kind of promise. If you have a concern about your child's health, development, or wellbeing, please speak to a doctor or another qualified professional — Fairyteller is not the place for that conversation, and, as the next section explains, we have deliberately built it not to ask you for that kind of information.

What you tell us about your child

The conversation that gets your child's stories started, and anything you change afterwards, is used only to write and personalise those stories: things like their first name, birthdate, interests, the people, pets and places in their life, comforting routines, and anything you would rather a story avoided.

Please do not tell us about a diagnosis, a condition, a medication, or any other health information about your child, even in your own words and even if it feels relevant — we do not ask for it, we do not want it, and the conversation is built not to invite it. Where a child would benefit from a gentler pace, plainer language, or the same story shape every night, you can turn that on directly, described by what it does rather than by why your child needs it, so that this kind of sensitive information never has to reach us at all.

You can review, change, or delete what you have told us at any time; see our privacy policy for how, and for how long we keep it.

Subscriptions, purchases and billing

Fairyteller bills in minutes: minutes are added to your account when you subscribe or make a one-time purchase, and a number of them are used each time a new story is written for your child, whether or not it is ever read aloud.

Every subscription and purchase is billed by Apple through the App Store, at the price the App Store shows you at the time — we do not set or display a price of our own inside the app. Subscriptions renew automatically until you cancel them, and you cancel through your Apple ID account settings; we cannot cancel or refund a purchase on your behalf, and Apple's own terms and refund policy govern any payment issue.

Referring other families

If you invite other families and enough of them join, we may credit your account with extra minutes as a thank-you. We can change how this works, or end it, at any time, and it is never a substitute for a paid subscription.

Stories, voices and pictures are made by artificial intelligence

Every story, the voice that reads it aloud, and any picture that comes with it, is generated by artificial intelligence — nothing your child hears or sees on the story screen has been written, recorded, or drawn by a person first. Nova, the assistant who has the conversation with you, tells you plainly that she is AI the first time you speak with her.

Because a machine is writing in the moment, a story can occasionally be less polished than we would like, or say something we would not have chosen, even though we build and test it carefully to stay warm, calm, and age-appropriate. If a particular part of a story concerns you, you can tell us about it from inside the app, and we use what you tell us to do better from the next story onwards.

Whose story it is

The setting, the characters, and the technology behind Fairyteller belong to us. The particular story we write for your child, once it exists, is yours to enjoy with your family — to read, to listen to, to keep.

What we ask in return is that you keep it within your family: please do not republish, sell, or otherwise redistribute a story we have written, and please do not use it to build or train another product, including another AI system.

Using Fairyteller with care

Please use Fairyteller as it is meant to be used: for your own child or children, with honest information about them, and without trying to make it produce something it is built not to — including putting a real child's private details, or a health or diagnosis label, into what you tell us.

Please do not try to take the conversation or the story-writing itself apart to extract how it works, or use it to generate anything unrelated to your family's bedtime stories. We can suspend or close an account used this way, or in a way that puts another family, a child, or Fairyteller itself at risk.

If something goes wrong

We build Fairyteller carefully, but we offer it as it is: we cannot promise it will always be available, free of mistakes, or exactly to your taste every night. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss connected to using it. Nothing in these terms limits a right the law does not allow us to limit, including any right you have as a consumer where you live.

Ending your account

You can stop using Fairyteller and delete your account at any time from inside the app; doing so cancels any subscription attached to it going forward, though, as above, Apple handles the billing itself. We can also close an account for the reasons described in the 'Using Fairyteller with care' section above, or if we ever have to stop offering the service, in which case we will try to give you reasonable notice first.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as Fairyteller changes, including once they have had a proper legal review, which has not happened yet. When we make a change that matters, we will tell you inside the app before it takes effect; continuing to use Fairyteller afterwards means you accept the update.

Governing law and disputes

Which country's law governs these terms, and where a dispute would be heard, is one of the questions we are asking a lawyer to help us settle. We will fill this section in before Fairyteller launches.
